Roanoke Rapids, NC — In honor of our veterans, The Center for Energy Education (C4EE) hosted their annual Veterans Day Program on Tuesday, November 9, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. C4EE recognized veterans in our community for their service, above and beyond the call of duty. Invited guests included veterans, public and elected officials, community leaders and more.
The keynote speaker for the event was newly elected Eddie Buffaloe Jr., Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety. Secretary Buffaloe was appointed by Gov. Roy Cooper on September 28, 2021. Secretary Buffaloe served for years in law enforcement and is a veteran himself. He served in the National Guard from 1989 to 1999 and left with the rank of specialist, 11 Charlie Mortar Infantry.
Buffaloe also has extensive ties to the Halifax/Northampton Community. Buffaloe recently served as Director of Public Safety for the Elizabeth City Department of Public Safety and interim City Manager. Prior to these roles, Buffaloe served in various law enforcement and public capacities across the state, including police chief.
“It’s important to take time to appreciate the sacrifices that others make on our behalf,” Buffaloe said. “I’m not sure we fully understand and recognize what veterans sacrifice as they defend our freedoms. Certainly, they risk their lives, but even during peaceful times, their training is risky. They give up living near their families and are constantly relocated away from friends. So, it’s important that we take time to thank them for what they do for our country.”
C4EE’s “Salute to our Heroes” program included the Presentation of Colors and drills by Roanoke Rapids High School JROTC followed by opening remarks from Levi Scott, Chief Master Sergeant, U.S. Air Force (retired), a welcome from James Pierce, Vice Chair, Center for Energy Education Board, and J. Michael Scott, member, Center for Energy Education Board, who gave the invocation. Additionally, there were musical selections by Walt Watts and Moira Underwood, a moment of silence for our fallen heroes, lead by Scott Hall, Chief Deputy Sheriff, Halifax County Sheriff Office, recognition of veterans by James H. Whitaker, Master Sargent, U.S. Air Force (retired), and prayers for our veterans, offered by Reverend Sonny Brown, All Saints Episcopal Church. Closing remarks were given by Mozine Lowe, Executive Director, Center for Energy Education.
Mr. Trian Hemmie, Medical Support Administration Supervisor, Department of Veteran Affairs, Emporia, VA was be onsite to discuss veteran benefits with interested veterans.
